Frequently Asked Questions
Below are answers to common questions about pricing, process, materials, travel, and community engagement. Whether you’re commissioning a large-scale public art project or a custom mural for your space, this FAQ covers what to expect when working with JMEL Art.
How much does a mural cost?
Mural costs depend on factors like wall size, surface preparation, condition, design complexity, materials, location, and access (such as lift rentals). Every project is tailored to the client’s needs, but a good starting point is around $35 +/- per square foot as a baseline.
Larger walls often have a lower rate per square foot, while smaller or highly detailed pieces may be higher. I can always help shape the scope to fit your vision and budget. I’m confident we can work together - send me a message with what you are thinking - I’m confident we can work together.
What’s included in your proposals?
All proposals are all-inclusive and tailored to the project’s needs. It typically outlines several budget options so you can choose what best fits your goals and resources. Proposals include design, materials, travel, equipment, installation, and protective coatings, as well as any site prep or logistics required to complete the mural safely and professionally. My goal is to make the process simple and transparent — you’ll always know what’s covered and what to expect.
What kind of paint do you use for murals?
I primarily work with Montana Colors spray paint, especially the MTN94 flat-finish line for its durability, matte texture, and color consistency. Depending on the wall and project, I may also use high-quality acrylics for large fills, specific tones, layers, or effects.
How do you prepare a wall for a mural?
Do you add a protective clear coat to the finished artwork?
Proper wall prep is essential for longevity. I start by cleaning and priming the surface with the appropriate primer for that material to ensure strong adhesion. Once the mural is complete, I typically apply MuralShield — a UV-protective coating that seals and preserves color vibrancy for years. An additional anti-graffiti coating is optional. Proper preparation and protection are key to keeping the mural looking its best long-term.
How long does it take to complete a mural?
Most murals are completed within two weeks or less, often between three and ten days depending on scale, detail, weather, and access. After reviewing your wall and concept, I’ll provide a clear timeline from design approval to final coat.
Do you travel for mural projects?
Yes. I’m a muralist based in California, but I paint murals nationwide — from coast to coast and beyond — with the flexibility and interest to take on international projects as well. Travel and lodging costs are factored into the proposal, and I handle all logistics needed to deliver a smooth, professional installation.
Can you create a mural that matches our brand or architectural style?
Absolutely. Many of my projects are collaborations with architects, developers, and design teams. I can align the mural’s palette, rhythm, and tone with your brand or environment so it feels fully integrated and intentional within the space.
What’s your creative process?
It starts with a conversation about your goals, site, and vision. From there, I develop digital sketches or mockups for feedback and approval. Once finalized, I scale the design to the wall using my doodle-grid technique and bring it to life with layers of spray paint and color blending. A clear protective coating always finishes the piece.
Do you do community engagement as part of your mural projects?
Absolutely. Community engagement is one of my favorite parts of the process — it helps the artwork feel rooted in the people and place it represents. Depending on the project, this might include input sessions, public talks, or hands-on workshops where participants contribute creatively. I’ve led collaborative projects with schools, arts councils, and local organizations, and I’m always open to tailoring engagement to fit each community’s goals.
Do you carry insurance?
Yes. I carry general liability insurance for all my projects, which protects both the client and the property throughout the mural process. Proof of coverage or a certificate of insurance can be provided upon request. For larger public or commercial installations, I can also list the client or property owner as additionally insured if required.
How do I hire you or request a quote?
